India’s First-Gen Leaders Are Rising — One Voice at a Time

From small towns to global forums, ALIF is empowering India’s underserved youth with world-class leadership programs rooted in access, equity, and real-world outcomes

The Story of a Movement

In a country overflowing with talent but limited by unequal opportunity, Aspiring Leaders India Foundation (ALIF)is rewriting the story for thousands of first-generation youth. Led by Nithya Gurukumar (Executive Director) and Sashi Gundala (Director, Operations), ALIF is not just another education program—it’s a nationwide movement dedicated to unlocking leadership potential in underserved communities.

As the  national affiliate of the Harvard-founded Aspire Institute, ALIF brings fully-funded, world-class leadership education directly to the doorsteps of young people who often stand furthest from global opportunity streams. But behind this exponential growth is a leadership duo whose experiences have uniquely shaped the organization’s vision and execution.

The Leaders Behind the Mission

Nithya Gurukumarbrings over 17 years of international development and corporate legal experience to ALIF’s mission. Beginning her career in corporate law, she transitioned into the social sector as a founding member of Dream A Dream’s teacher development program that scaled across India. She later headed fundraising at STiR Education, successfully raising $20 million for system-wide educational reform. A Thomas Buergenthal Scholar with a law degree from The George Washington University, Nithya combines entrepreneurial spirit with a deep understanding of the structural barriers Indian youth face.

Sashi Gundala, with her distinctive blend of engineering and educational leadership, embodies the heart of inclusive empowerment. An engineer by training (Bangalore University) and an educator by passion (Rutgers University), Sashi’s career spans 20+ years across continents—from founding a successful IT staffing firm in the U.S. to leading STEAM education initiatives across India, and to heading schools for children with special needs. Her personal journey fuels her belief that leadership isn't about privilege—it’s about access.

Together, Nithya and Sashi  are not just running ALIF—they are reengineering how leadership opportunity reaches India’s underserved youth.

From Barriers to Breakthroughs

India’s vast youth population (30% under the age of 30) holds enormous potential. But for millions of first-generation learners, systemic inequities in education, career readiness, and global exposure remain enormous obstacles. This is the gap ALIF is closing.

“We know India doesn’t lack ambition,” says Nithya. “What it lacks is a system that can recognize and nurture leadership from every corner—rural villages, small towns, and low-income communities.”

In just two years, ALIF has scaled with astonishing speed:

Over 62,000 learners since 2022
Applications growing exponentially: from 6,000 in 2023 to 30,000+ in 2025
A program also catering toearly career professionals in companies like Mahindra Group, Porter
A fully digital, scalable, cost-effective model projected to reach 1 million Indian students by 2027.

The Aspire Leaders Program (ALP): A Flagship with Global Roots

At the core of ALIF’s offering is the Aspire Leaders Program (ALP)—a nine-week, fully-funded leadership accelerator for youth aged 18–29, especially first-generation learners from low-income backgrounds. Co-founded by Harvard Business School faculty, the program delivers:

Leadership Foundations & Self-Awareness Training
Global Masterclasses with Harvard and top global faculty
Cross-cultural peer learning communities
Certification signed by Harvard Business School faculty

Beyond the core program, ALIF continues to invest in alumni through its Extended Leadership Program (ELP)—offering:

Global mentorship and masterclasses
Job placements, internships, and fellowships
Seed funding for social impact ventures (over $200K awarded)
STEAM fellowships and alumni-led initiatives
“It's not just a leadership course,” says Sashi. “It’s a lifelong network. We are building confidence, critical thinking, and professional readiness that follows our students far beyond graduation.”

Outcomes That Matter

Unlike many programs that stop at enrollment, ALIF measures its success by life-changing outcomes:

75% report stronger career direction
60% go on to higher education or become changemakers in their communities
Alumni have secured global scholarships like Erasmus Mundus and advanced careers in business, medicine, sustainability, and beyond.

Manish Sontake, from rural Maharashtra, credits ALIF’s mentorship for his postgraduate success, while Harsimran Kaur of Jalandhar leverages her ALIF experience as a global Erasmus Mundus scholar.

“These stories aren’t exceptions,” says Nithya. “They’re exactly why ALIF exists.”

Lean, Scalable, Transparent

At the heart of ALIF’s rapid scale is its lean and frugal operating model.

Every rupee invested goes directly into transforming lives—making ALIF one of India’s most cost-effective leadership pipelines for underserved communities.

Strategic Partnerships Fueling Impact

ALIF’s growing network of partners includes:

Corporates: Mahindra, Porter, InMobi, Glance, Timbuckdo
Nonprofits: Teach for India, Piramal Foundation, Avanti Fellows, PhysicsWallah, Foundation for Excellence
Government: Ministry of Youth & Sports, Karnataka Department of Technical Education

These alliances ensure that ALIF’s impact reaches deep into communities and that its students have pathways to real-world career opportunities.

The Road Ahead

With its proven model in place, Sashi and Nithya are steering ALIF toward an even more ambitious future:

Embedding ALP as a credit module in universities
Launching national leadership bootcampsand Aspire Summits
Expanding corporate partnerships for internships, jobs, and scholarships—particularly for young women in STEM
Scaling to over 1 million Indian learners annually by 2027

The Heart of It All: Empowerment Over Achievement

Ask Sashi what drives her, and she doesn’t hesitate. “It’s watching a young woman from a rural town in Bihar speak confidently in a global forum. It’s seeing a student from a low-income background land their first job. That’s why we do what we do.”

Aspire India is not just a leadership program—it’s a platform for social and economic mobility, a bridge between untapped talent and unprecedented opportunity.

For Nithya & Sashi, the work is just beginning. As Aspire India scales, it invites not only students—but educators, institutions, sponsors, and changemakers—to join the mission.

Whether you're a young dreamer in a small town or a corporate leader in a skyscraper, there’s a role for you in this movement.

Leadership isn’t about titles. It’s about transforming potential into purpose, and standing up for those still waiting for a seat at the table,” say the dynamic duo.

Join the Movement

As Nithya & Sashi say: "Progress for India must mean progress for allIndians. When first-generation leaders thrive, entire communities rise with them."

Aspire Leaders India Foundation is not simply filling a gap—it is building a national platform for social mobility, global competence, and leadership equity.

For students, educators, funders, and corporations alike, ALIF offers an invitation: rewrite the story. Lead the future.
