From YouTube Lessons to National Impact: Bhagat Singh’s Journey to Democratize Learning

Bhagat Singh, founder of CivilSpot.in, is quietly transforming UPSC preparation by putting purpose before profit. Born in a small Himachal village, he built an affordable, trust-driven ed-tech platform rooted in self-study, values, and real impact—without ads or investor pressure. His story is a blueprint for meaningful, lean, and ethical entrepreneurship.

  The Spark Behind the Spotlight

In the sprawling, crowded arena of Indian ed-tech, where ad-driven influencers and overpriced courses dominate the stage, Bhagat Singh is scripting a refreshingly grounded narrative. The founder of CivilSpot.in, an emerging platform for UPSC aspirants, isn't chasing scale or startup buzzwords. Instead, he’s focused on trust, impact, and a radical belief that education, especially in a democracy, should be accessible to all.

“I wasn’t trying to build a business initially,” Bhagat recalls. “I just started a YouTube channel in 2023 to help students who couldn’t afford the expensive courses offered by the big names in ed-tech. That organic connection—students trusting my content—became the foundation for CivilSpot.in.”

Today, that same trust fuels a platform that's quietly making waves in the UPSC preparation world, especially among repeat aspirants disillusioned with traditional coaching.

An Educator Before an Entrepreneur

Before donning the founder’s hat, Bhagat Singh had already established his credibility as an educator. He worked with several top ed-tech giants, building a loyal student base in the process. But over time, cracks started appearing beneath the shiny surface.

“There was a serious trust deficit,” he says candidly. “Ed-tech platforms were onboarding YouTubers as educators just because they had reach—not because they had depth. UPSC is an exam that demands respect. Knowledge must come first.”

Seeing students struggle under overpriced, ineffective systems was the final push. Bhagat began creating free YouTube content—carefully crafted, syllabus-aligned, and deeply researched. As engagement grew, so did the idea for something more sustainable. CivilSpot.in was born.

Democratizing UPSC Preparation

Unlike most platforms that chase scale with shallow content and deep marketing budgets, CivilSpot.inflips the script. Its core offerings are not only affordable but laser-focused on delivering real value.

“Our flagship program is PYQ Research,” Bhagat explains. “We dissect UPSC’s Previous Year Questions (PYQs) to help students revise the entire syllabus in a strategic, high-yield manner.”

And the results speak for themselves. The hit ratio—i.e., the percentage of static syllabus questions in the actual prelims that can be answered using CivilSpot's methodology—is around 40%.

That's not just high—it’s game-changing.

In addition to the PYQ module, the platform also offers niche, high-impact courses such as a full Science & Techmodule and another that covers Indian Polity through the real text of the Constitution—a unique approach that avoids the regurgitation of textbook summaries and instead fosters deep conceptual understanding.

“Most of our students have already attempted prelims two or three times. They come to us because they’re done with the gimmicks,” he adds.

The Struggles That Shaped the Vision

To truly understand why CivilSpot.in remains affordable—and even free for many—it helps to look at Bhagat Singh’s own journey.

Raised in a small village in Himachal Pradesh, Bhagat studied in a Hindi-medium government school while his father ran a modest sweets shop. Financial constraints were real, but they never stood in the way of ambition. He went on to complete his BA and Master’s from Himachal Pradesh University—and began preparing for competitive exams on his own, without any coaching or external guidance.

Despite these challenges, Bhagat cleared the UPSC Prelims three times consecutively, passed the CAPF Assistant Commandant exam twice, cleared the CDS exam four times, and qualified the UGC NET five times—all by relying on self-study, discipline, and resilience.

“I know what it’s like to face affordability barriers,” he shares. “That’s why I make sure CivilSpot remains low-cost—and why around 25% of our enrollments are completely freefor students from economically weaker sections.”

Bhagat is just 24—but his lived experience has already become a compass guiding the platform’s mission.

Bootstrapped, Organic, and Profitable

What makes CivilSpot.in even more remarkable is its ultra-lean business model. Bhagat hasn’tspent a single rupee on advertising.

“Everything has been organic,” he says proudly. “My entire subscriber base comes from YouTube. After the initial investment in a good LMS platform—which wasn’t cheap—I’ve had zerooperating costs.”

The result? A rare phenomenon in the ed-tech startup space: 100% profit margins.

But that didn’t come without challenges. “The first hurdle was confidence,” he admits. “Ed-tech is a brutal space. You’re up against giants with unlimited marketing budgets. But I knew I wasn’tcompeting with them—I was creating something for those who already trusted me.”

Another barrier was infrastructure. LMS platforms—essential for delivering quality courses—aren’t cheap. Fortunately, Bhagat’s previous roles allowed him to save up just enough to launch the platform without external funding.

And then came the psychological battle: Was this really going to work?Bhagat didn’t know. But he kept showing up. Every new enrollment became a small vote of confidence, a sign that his approach was working.

“Every single day I gain new trust—it’s like a new milestone. So yes, every day is a big day,” he says, smiling.

Philosophy Over Hustle

In a world obsessed with scale, growth hacks, and unicorn status, Bhagat Singh’s approach borders on the philosophical. Literally.

“I believe in the Taoist principle of ‘wu wei’—action without overplanning, flowing with instinct,” he shares. “I don’t have massive scaling ambitions. I’m not trying to conquer the market. If my work is good, it will find its place.”

Instead of aggressive KPIs or sales targets, Bhagat focuses on consistency, clarity, and content quality. That’s his KPI. And his students notice.

Lessons for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Bhagat’s story is more than a profile—it’s a blueprint for values-driven entrepreneurship. Here are three key takeaways from his journey:

1. Start with Service, Not Sales
2. “I didn’t begin this to make money. I started to help students who couldn’t afford the system. The money followed,” he says.
3. Lean Models Can Be Powerful

With no marketing spend and only a one-time LMS investment, CivilSpot is a rare case of a profitable ed-tech startup running on near-zero operating costs.

4. Trust Is the Real Currency

“The biggest asset I have is my students’ trust. That doesn’t come from ads or branding. It comes from honesty and consistency.”

Looking Ahead: Slow Growth, Strong Roots

So, what does the future hold for CivilSpot.in?

“Let’s just say I hope to keep operating on Planet Earth,” Bhagat laughs. “No grand projections. Just a desire to continue doing meaningful work. I trust the journey.”

It’s a humble yet powerful vision: to resist the noise, respect the learner, and believe that the right actions will bear the right results.

Final Thoughts: Building Trust in a Distracted World

In an age of monetized attention and shallow engagement, Bhagat Singh’s approach reminds us that real impact doesn’t always scale instantly—but it lasts longer. CivilSpot.in isn’t just another ed-tech platform; it’s a quiet rebellion against the transactional culture of modern learning.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, Bhagat’s journey is proof that you don’t need flashy pitches or viral campaigns to make a difference. All you need is a clear purpose, a loyal community, and the courage to walk your own path—even if it means going against the grain
